Job summary

This position is designed to support the Center Director with Center-based duties and to serve as the Head of Academics for the Vienna Center; the primary responsibility of this role is to ensure the academic excellence of the curricular offerings and student experiences at IES Abroad Vienna.

Reports to: Center Director Vienna; Direct Reports: Academics Team (Academics Manager and 4 part-time Faculty Coordinators working with ca. 60 Adjunct Faculty) and the whole IES Vienna team in the Center Director’s absence (currently 14 FTEs).

Job description

Academic Strategy

  • Works with Center Director on the strategic development 
  • Develops medium and long-term strategic goals for academics
  • Maintains goals and evaluative measures of each of the Center programs
  • Ensures that academic directives and initiatives are carried out
  • Provides reports regarding planning and the status of such projects as needed

Faculty Management

Course Management and Academic Excursions

Academic Excellence

  • Strives continually to improve and maintain academic standards
  • Assists in the planning, execution and evaluation of program assessments
  • Ensures that academic directives and initiatives are carried out


  • May teach courses on an occasional basis in his/her subject area(s) (only at IES Abroad Vienna, not to exceed 1 course per semester). 

Administrative Work

  • Helps in the day-to-day administration of the IES Abroad Vienna Center
  • Develops guidelines, forms, protocols and texts
  • Takes recruiting trips to affiliated institutions
  • Ensures correct budgeting and spending for the Academics Department.
  • Coordinates with the Center Director and Program Dean in Chicago on strategic issues

Emergency Response and Crisis Management

Job qualifications

  • PhD or terminal degree
  • Familiarity with the US educational system
  • At least 5 years teaching experience at the university level
  • Excellent teaching evaluations
  • Excellent communication skills in German and English
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Management experience
  • Austrian work and residence permit

Remuneration commensurate with qualifications; minimum gross annual salary €75,000.
